Aurecool

Aurecool is a digital tool for teachers, internal supervisors, and behavioural scientists in (secondary) special education. The platform helps professionals map the emotional and social development of students and respond to it in a targeted way. Think of insights into developmental ages per category, concrete classroom recommendations, and clear charts that are also useful in conversations with parents.

The strength of Aurecool lies in a number of smart components:

• The Development Line maps a student's level across Autonomy, Relationship, Competence, and Adolescence.
• The Profile consolidates that information into a clear overview, including strengths and weaknesses, which can directly serve as the basis for a development plan.
• Via Focus Points, teachers see exactly which developmental steps a student is currently taking and which pedagogical approach fits. This works both at an individual level and for the entire class via a group plan.
• Finally, the Perspective Indicator shows the full picture: how a student's emotional and social development has evolved over the years and which exit perspective fits.

The challenge: modernising without losing data

Aurecool had been around for some time and had built up a substantial user base over the years. However, the underlying technology was starting to hinder the platform's growth and further development. The old application was built on an outdated foundation, making new features difficult to add and the user experience falling short of what schools now expect.

The question was clear: how do you modernise a fully operational software platform, including all historical student data, without existing users noticing a thing?

Our approach: fully rebuilt in Laravel

We rebuilt the web application from scratch. We chose Laravel as the foundation — a robust and proven PHP framework that is exceptionally well-suited for complex web applications. Laravel provides the structure to build in a scalable and maintainable way and lays a solid foundation for future extensions.

The biggest technical challenge was not the build itself, but the existing data. Aurecool had years of student records, scores, and development history stored. Discarding that data was not an option, as it is the very core of what makes the platform valuable. That is why we retained the existing database and developed smart connectors for it. These connectors ensure that the new application communicates seamlessly with the old data structure, without historical records being lost or having to be migrated manually.

This resulted in an application that looks and feels modern, fully built on the reliable data that had been carefully built up over the years.

The result: faster, clearer, and future-proof

Schools that have been working with Aurecool for years see a fresh interface with their own data when they make the switch. All historical student records, scores, and development history are simply available. New features can now be developed further without outdated code getting in the way.
